Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya City

We took a minivan from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and it took us almost 3 hours to reach. The aircon stopped working midway but that didn’t matter much because it was quite chilly in Nuwara Eliya. We enjoyed the winding roads, cold winds along with the rewarding scenic views on our way. Make sure to add some photo-stops to your ride as the city is surrounded by lush green hills, waterfalls, and tea plantations that make it so picturesque.

The city was established by the British in the 19th century as a summer retreat to escape the heat of the coastal areas. The city still reflects the British influence in its colonial architecture, including the famous Hill Club, a members-only establishment that was once a gathering place for British officers. And maybe that’s why it’s also known as 'Little England’.

One of the main attractions of Nuwara Eliya is its tea plantations. Sri Lanka is famous for its Ceylon tea, and Nuwara Eliya is one of the major tea-growing regions in the country. Visitors can take a tour of the tea factories and learn how tea is processed from the fresh tea leaves. The tea plantations also offer scenic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. We went to Damro Tea Factory formerly known as Mackwood Tea and opted for a guided tour where you can witness tea plucking and processing and also taste some of their best teas.

The Grand Hotel is situated on Nuwara Eliya Hill right next to the Nuwara Eliya Golf Course. It’s surrounded by greenery features 2 restaurants, a shopping arcade and a gym. Rooms at Grand Hotel are equipped with heaters as it’s chilly most times of the year. Make sure to book well in advance as this place is often full.

Themparadu

The restaurant in tucked in a quiet alley. They offer indoor and outdoor seating and both have a fireplace as it’s quite chilly in Nuwara Eliya most of the time. The place has great vibes and the food here is amazing.

Ambaal's

For those looking for some healthy vegetarian food this place is a great option. They offer the south Indian variety like dosas, wadas, sambar, idly etc. This place is also not very expensive and great for people travelling on budget

Hill Club Restaurant

This is a club from the colonial days and serves traditional British food. You can also enjoy their popular high tea which comes with sandwiches, savories, scones & some sweets.

This is a small town so it doesn’t have the rich culinary culture one would expect however there are some good places where you can find decent food. You can also find rice & curry places all over Sri Lanka if you want to try local homemade food.
